Pitch Reports #Cricbuzz

Another low-scoring game. In the previous afternoon game at this venue, the Titans defended 135 despite LSG having scored more than 100 in the first 14 overs. Teams batting first have won three of the five matches played here. But thunderstorms have been forecast during the match time, which could lead to a curtailed game. Hence, bat or bowl will be a vexing issue for the captain winning the toss.

Probable Playing XI

LSG

M Vohra , Kyle Mayers, Deepak Hooda, Marcus Stoinis, Krunal Pandya, Nicholas Pooran(wk), Ayush Badoni, Krishnappa Gowtham, Ravi Bishnoi, Naveen ul huq/M Wood, Amit Mishra.

CSK

Ruturaj Gaikwad, Devon Conway, Ajinkya Rahane, Moeen Ali, Ambati Rayudu, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni (c & wk), Matheesha Pathirana, Tushar Deshpande, Maheesh Theekshana/M Santner.

Key players to watch & stats

Lucknow Super Giants

Kyle Mayers thumped a memorable 22-ball 53 against CSK earlier this season. But, in his last four matches at Lucknow, Mayers has not got going, with scores of 13, 29, 24 and 0.

Marcus Stoinis against CSK has scored just 78 runs (avg. 19.50) and is wicketless in six overs (econ. 9.33). Can he turn those numbers around today?

Nicholas Pooran is a player who can turn the game in LSG’s favour. In seven matches against CSK, Pooran has belted 172 runs at an average of 34.40 and strike rate of 172.00.

Ravi Bishnoi has taken seven wickets in five matches on this ground. Expect the legspinner to have a key role to play on a slow, turning pitch.

Bishnoi has dismissed Gaikwad once in 11 balls (17 runs).

Krishnappa Gowtham is a player to watch given CSK have left-handers Conway, Dube, Moeen and Jadeja in their lineup. The offspinner found decent turn in the game against RCB, where he took 1/10.

Chennai Super Kings

Devon Conway is enjoying a dream season. He has struck five half-centuries in nine matches, totaling 414 runs at an average of 59.14 and strike rate of 144.25. He also struck a 29-ball 47 against LSG earlier this season.

Ruturaj Gaikwad’s technical ability can come in handy on a sluggish pitch. He smashed a 31-ball 57 against LSG earlier in IPL 2023.

Shivam Dube has belted 20 sixes this season. Granted, hitting sixes at Lucknow is a tougher ask, but he does have a good strike rate against Ravi Bishnoi in the IPL (165).

Moeen Ali took LSG apart earlier in this IPL (4/26). On a pitch expected to aid turn, Moeen should get a few overs in especially against LSG’s left-handers.

Tushar Deshpande is the leading wicket-taker in IPL 2023 (17), where he has gone wicketless just once. Expect the seamer to bowl into the surface and try get batsmen caught on the square boundaries.

Other intresting Stats and Facts

Head-to-head: Matches 2, LSG 1, CSK 1.

Ajinkya Rahane is striking at 189.83 this season, but has been dismissed five times in 67 balls against spin this season (SR 147.8).

Amit Mishra vs CSK: 16 matches, 13 wickets, avg. 30.85, SR 26.08.

Ravindra Jadeja has taken at least one wicket in each of his last four matches. The left-armer should enjoy bowling at Lucknow.

Ravi Bishnoi took 3/28 against CSK earlier this season. He dismissed Gaikwad, Dube and Moeen.

Doing this would have another potential benefit, since Ravindra Jadeja has also tended to struggle against spin. He went at 80.55, 63.41 and 83.33 against spin in his three previous IPL seasons, and this year he's scored 21 off 16 balls against that style of bowling.

Tushar Deshpande could be on his way to setting a dubious record. With 17 wickets in nine games, he is the leading wicket-taker so far in IPL 2023, but he's also leaked runs at an economy rate of 11.07. Of all previous Purple Cap winners, Mohit Sharma (23 wickets in 2014) had the poorest economy rate: 8.39.
